Condensate return pumps are also needed even when the steam boiler is in the same building if condensate collection and piping are at locations too low to drain by gravity back to the steam boiler. In a heating method condensate is the result of steam transferring a portion of its heat called latent heat to the product line or equipment being heated. An effective condensate recovery system collecting the hot condensate from the steam using equipment and returning it to the boiler feed system can pay for itself in a remarkably short period of time.

If not the valuable heat energy it contains can be retained by returning it to the boiler feedtank. Where a separate condensate receiver is used a feed pump to move condensate back to the boiler must be energized by a boiler mounted condensate return pump controller. If it is contaminated it will probably be sent to drain. Condensate pumps are designed to collect condensed liquid at remote locations in a steam system and move it back to the boiler room.

Figure 14 1 4 shows a simple steam and condensate circuit with condensate returning to the boiler feedtank. Condensate can be driven by either electricity or steam. Collects condensate for reuse which reduces fuel costs.
